After the 1997 film , “Titanic”, more than the romantic story of Jack and Rose, a lot of people’s attention have been drawn to the real story behind the most legendary ship. Indeed, Titanic is the most fabled ship of all time because of the measure of the entire project. The ship was said to be the mirror of injustice during the 20th century, leading the ship dubbed as the “unsinkable” to a tragic fate. Titanic became world renowned because nothing beats its record as the biggest disaster in maritime history. It has served as a gleaming light, an object of fascination to most historians and mere enthusiasts. As years go by upon its discovery in 1985, science continues to unravel more mysteries that catch more attention from the history lovers.
White Star Line, a huge shipping company in Great Britain came up with an idea to build the world’s largest and most prestigious ship in the 20th century. It was called RMS Titanic. Designed by Thomas Andrew, the construction of Titanic commenced in 1909 at the naval site of Harland and Wolf.
Titanic was extremely colossal and it became the biggest luxury ship that was ever built in history. It went beyond the era of steam engine. The length of Titanic extended up to880 feetand its weight reached over 46,000 tons. The super ship had a capacity to board 3,547 passengers. Titanic’s luxurious offering and its mammoth size amazed most people back then. The people behind the construction of this mega ship took great pride, as their creation was said to take passengers across the perilous ocean of the Atlantic with an experience of total luxury and class.
The ship was designed to cater to a higher market, the affluent first class passengers. The facilities were truly world class and priceless with a high quality restaurant, swimming pool, and sports center. The second and third class passengers were able to board; however, only in the purpose of reaching the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Titanic set sail on the 10th of April 1912 from Southampton and was bound to end in New York. The ship carried a number of 2,228 people of diverse nationalities and social background. However, four days after Titanic sailed, the ship came to a tragic accident after striking an iceberg. In just three hours, the ship that is said to be unsinkable even by God, completely submerged in water.
It led to a casualty that reached 1,522. Evidently, White Star Line was not prepared for such tragedy with only 16 life boats available that can accommodate 1178 passengers only. The rest succumbed to the freezing water of the Atlantic Ocean.
